How did I learn
The way I learned several new languages were al the same. You had a textbook and a exercise book. In the exercise book there were exercises about grammar, vocabulary and sometimes pronunciation. During the lesson the teacher taught us things what was in the textbook and if the teacher was done with the explaining we had to do some exercises, they were to practice what just had learned. We would also get homework with some exercises to do. Sometimes we did some pronunciation exercises, but mainly grammar and vocabulary. The homework you got were mainly exercises about grammar and vocabulary words and sentences. Sometimes at the beginning of the lesson the teacher would choose two people to do a oral vocabulary test to check if they done their homework and he would grade them. The test for German and French were always about grammar, vocabulary and listening, but English about grammar and vocabulary. We only had one oral test for each language, so they pronunciation wasn’t the most important subject of all. I personally think that is a pity, because I was really good in the pronunciation of German, French and English, but you almost never get graded for it. You sometimes had to read things in class and then you would get some feedback, but that was just it, so you never really learned to pronounce the words really proper. That is important, that you also can pronounce the words properly. When you speak a language you also have to know how to pronounce the language in a good way and not only grammatically good. Sometimes if you pronounce a word differently you will get a completely different word and meaning and you don’t even know it. I get it that grammar is important and vocabulary too, but pronunciation also has to be important, or people in foreign countries still won’t understand you. And it doesn’t matter if you have the grammar al right and you have a great vocabulary, if you don’t know how to pronounce it well you still are nothing.
